Claydon House has been the seat of the Verney family since 1620. The present house is almost entirely 18th century having undergone major redevelop in 1757 and 1771 to rival the nearby manor house at Stowe. Only a fragment of the great house is still standing with is 18th century state rooms and much of the interior woodwork and elaborate carvings found throughout the house are unique to Claydon.
Claydon has great examples of bespoke architecture not just on wood carvings but on ironmongery as well.
Most of the elaborate wood carving and architectural designs can been seen in the Chinese Room. All the wood was painted white, which is believed to be because it was all carved in pine which comes in many shades and discolours over time.
The house that remains today is around a third of the Earl’s creation and is saturated with surprising stories and fascinating objects from four hundred years of Verney family history, which includes connections by marriage to nursing pioneer Florence Nightingale.
To date MBL have worked with Claydon house on many aspects of the property. We have repaired historic locks back to full working order, manufacture hand cut keys to existing working historic locks and have provided the house a condition score survey, stating what ironmongery is present, if it is original, its age and what works are required to the items.
