Belton’s Baffling Boathouse

Belton's Baffling Boathouse restoration ironmongery by Mid Beds LocksmithsMBL worked with both the design team and the main contractor to restore and replicate the ironmongery on this gem in the Lincolnshire countryside.

Works ranged from reproducing missing hinge fronts in hand-forged iron to the full restoration of the original lock cases. The design and manufacture was also undertaken of uniquely beautiful window fasteners in steel; from a design sketch made by the architect, Nick Cox on a wet and windy day perched on top of the boathouse balcony!

During the restoration of the lockcases, the date and signature of the last locksmith to work on them was found – this, under instruction from The National Trust Conservation team and Nick Cox, was carefully preserved using modern techniques for the next locksmith to find in 100 years (the restored lockcase was also signed, with approval, by our own locksmiths to maintain the tradition).
